- Layne & Bowler

- INTRODUCTION
- Mechanically powered turbine pumps were first developed
and manufactured in 1904 by the Layne & Bowler Pump
Company. Because of this established industry leadership
billions of gallons more will be pumped by Layne &
Bowler pumps in the future. The vertical turbine pump
has, from its inception, been specified for difficult or
unusual applications. Among these are limited floor
space, reduced operating noise levels, high efficiency,
high discharge pressures and unusual suction conditions-
such as required for low NPSH. All vertical turbines look
quite similar. In fact, most manufacturers have designed
their pumps, when practical, to allow installation within
a range of standard well casing pipe sizes. Beyond
external appearances, the pumps reflect a more unique
character when considering applications. some are
designed only for wells, some for short settings, others
for low pressure, some for high pressure, etc. The
vertical turbine is one of three basic pump designs which
also includes mixed flow and propeller types. Standard
Francis Vane impeller type turbine pumps described in
this bulletin produce low to medium volumes of water at
high pressure. Layne & Bowler vertical pumps are
designed primarily for heavy duty, continuous operation,
municipal and industrial applications. As a result, Layne
& Bowler vertical pumps are unique when compared to
the rest of the pump industry for normal, less demanding
applications. The average installation can expect
extra-long trouble-free pump life. This bulletin on short
set pumps explains how one variation of the basic
vertical design can best suit your specific application.
A review of this bulletin will show you why Layne &
Bowler offers the most value in vertical turbine pumps. A
local sales office is listed in the yellow pages.
